Last weekend several FDT students traveled to Winnipeg to compete in the Senior National Public Speaking Championships. In an incredibly competitive tournament featuring top public speakers from across Canada, we are proud to announce that Joyce Chen placed 4th overall and was chosen to join the Canadian national speech team. She is set to represent Canada at the Worlds Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships in Shanghai next year.
We have other great results to announce. Nicholas Viegas placed 8th overall, Vivian Gu placed 13th, and Nora Zhu placed 15th. In the individual categories, Nicholas Viegas placed 2nd in the impromptu category and Emily Ni placed 3rd. Moreover, in the interpretative reading category, Joyce Chen placed 3rd overall with Nora Zhu and Vivian Gu also making the finals. In persuasive speaking, Natalie Viegas made the final and in debate Emily Ni, Joyce Chen, and Vivian Gu all made the finals.
We want to give special recognition to Nicholas Viegas who, in addition to placing 8th in Canada, was the only student to advance to 3 out of 3 finals. Moreover, Nicholas already qualified to represent Canada at Worlds after an outstanding showing earlier this month at the International Independent Schools Public Speaking Competition.
Congratulations to all of our students and we wish Joyce and Nicholas the best of luck at Worlds.
