Angelina and Nicholas named among 10 best speakers in the World!

We have some exciting news from the Worlds Individuals Public Speaking and Debate Championships in Toronto this past weekend! Angelina Zhang has placed as the 7th place speaker overall in the entire world and Nicholas Viegas placed 10th overall! Angelina and Nicholas were named in the top 10 of over 100 of the world’s best speakers from 11 countries including the US, Australia, and China among others.

Moreover Angelina made it to the finals for impromptu speaking and debate, while Nicholas made finals for interpretative reading, placing 4th overall in that category.

FDT team makes Semi-Finals at Harvard World Schools Invitational

FDT is just finishing up an exciting weekend at one of the world's most competitive debate tournaments, the Harvard World Schools Invitational. We are so proud to announce that FDT Purple finished 4th overall, in a field of 62 of the world's best teams including the national teams of many countries. Congratulations to Alice Xu, Aurora Zhang, Jena Yue, and Athens Wu for their hard work in not only breaking to Octo-Finals, but fighting their way to the Semi-Finals where they lost to the Canadian National Team. What's even more astounding is that these girls are only in Grade 8 and Grade 9!

More than that we want to congratulate Saara Meghji and Angelina Zhang, who were debating for the Canadian National Team and made it to the Octo-Finals, as well as Allan Lee, whose team made it to the Quarter-Finals. Moreover, the Danish National Debate Team coached by Frankie Cena, Dena Tabyanian, and Arsalan Ghaemi, made it to the Quarter Finals! For speaker awards we want to congratulate Allan Lee for placing as the 7th best speaker overall, Saara and Angelina who tied for 8th place speaker overall, and Aurora Zhang who was named the 5th best novice speaker.

We are so proud of students and their hard work and of course their success wouldn't be possible without the hard work of their chaperones and coaches. Well done guys!

FDT students Lauren Meikle and Emily Ni named provincial champions

FDT ended up sending over 30 of it’s students to the BC Provincial Debate Championships that were held this weekend in Victoria, BC and we have some great results to announce after a very tough and competitive weekend of debate. We want to congratulate Leo Wang and Judy Rhee who were named the 4th place senior team in the province, and Allan Lee and Jamin Feng who came in 6th. In the junior category we want to recognize Lauren Meikle and Emily Ni for their outstanding achievement in being named the Champion junior team. Moreover, congrats to Peter Zhang who was the top junior speaker and Lauren Meikle who came in 5th place. We also want to congratulate David Xia who was named the 3rd place novice speaker and Jerry Zhang, who came in 4th place.  We will also be sending multiple teams to the national debate championships! Eric Li and Jonathan Chu, Alex Logan and Jessie Liu, and Sean Oh, will be going on to the Junior Debate Championships later this year in Quebec. Allan Lee and Jamin Feng, along with Judy Rhee and Leo Wang will be advancing to the Senior National Debate Championships in Halifax later this year. We wish all our teams the best of luck!

4 FDT students advance to French Debate Nationals

This weekend the Bilingual Debate Provincial Championships were held at West Point Grey Academy and we have some amazing results to announce.

Eric Li was named the 2nd place Speaker in the Junior category and came in 5th place as a team. Moreover, Vivian Gu was the Top Speaker in the Senior category, while Angelina Zhang came in 3rd place, and Emily Ni came in 5th place. Emily Ni and Nikki Wu were named the Top Senior Team, while Vivian Gu came in 4th place as a team.

We are so excited for Eric, Nikki, Vivian, and Emily who will go to French Debate Nationals in Halifax this year. We wish them the best of luck!

Kiran and Angelina win Lower Mainland West Championship after all-FDT final

Last Saturday at the Lower Mainland West Regional Tournament, after 4 rounds of intense debate in the senior category, FDT's own instructors battled it out in the final round. In the end Kiran Basra and Angelina Zhang were named champions! We want to congratulate them on their victory and also to Saara Meghji and Bianca Dammholz who were runner-ups. Moreover we have some other great results to announce.In the senior category, Kelly Ho and Joyce Chen came in 4th place overall, Nellie Sun and Bobo Wong came in 5th, and Nikki Wu and Joanna Chen came in 7th. In the junior category the Champion team was Ellen Li and Vivian Gu followed by Emily Ni and Lauren Meikle in 4th, Caitlin May and Hailey Chen in 5th, Skyler Chan and Jason You in 6th place, and Grace Lee and Selina Xu in 8th.

Individually, as speakers, our students did excellently as well. Bianca Dammholz was the top speaker overall in the senior category, Saara Meghji came 2nd, Kiran Basra came 4th, Joyce Chen came 6th, Angelina Zhang came 7th, Nikki Wu came 8th, and Nellie Sun came 10th. In the junior category, Emily Ni came 1st overall, Ellen Li came 2nd, Vivian Gu came 4th, Lauren Meikle came 5th, and Skyler Chan came 9th.

That means overall we have 18 students and instructors from FDT qualifying to provincials from this region! We wish the students the best of the luck at provincials in March.

7 FDT students qualify for Public Speaking Nationals

This weekend was the annual BC Provincial Speech Championships. We have exciting news to share with you. 7 FDT students will be going to Speech Nationals this year. We are pleased to announce that in the Senior Division, Angelina Zhang came 4th overall, Judy Rhee came 5th, Anthony Chu came 6th.

In the Interpretative Reading category Anthony came 3rd and Judy was a Finalist. In the Impromptu Speech category Anthony came 1st and Angelina came 2nd. In Debate, Angelina came 2nd.

In the Junior Division Nora Zhu came 3rd, Katherine Feng came 5th, Jena Yue came 6th,  and Eric Li came 7th.

In the Interpretative Reading category Katherine came 2nd while Jena was a Finalist. In the Impromptu Speech category Nora came 2nd, and Eric was a Finalist. In Persuasive Speech Jena came 2nd. In Debate, Katherine came 2nd and Eric 3rd.

We are so happy with all our students and their amazing work. Now begins the hard work to prepare for Nationals!

After all-FDT Final, Jason and Anthony named Junior Champions at UBC Fall Tournament

Its been another outstanding UBC Fall High School Tournament for FDT Academy. Lets start with the results. Out of 8 teams breaking to Quarter-Finals in the Junior Category, 5 were from FDT. Congratulations to Peter Zhang and Michael Wu and Athens Wu and Jena Yue for breaking to the Quarter-Finals. Further congratulations to Eric Li and Jonathan Chu who made it to Semi-Finals. Finally, after a contentious Final round between FDT students Anthony Chu, Jason Guo, Sarah Sheng, and Angela Lu, we are pleased to announce your Champion Junior Team was Jason and Anthony! We want to still commend Angela and Sarah who were well deserving of being Finalists.

That's not all. We had great results in the senior category as well. We had multiple teams break to the Semi-Finals including Saara Meghji and Angelina Zhang and Kiran Basra and Maggie MacInnis. We would also like to congratulate Ellen Li and Vivian Gu  and Leo Wang and Judy Rhee for being finalists! We are so happy with the final results and want to congratulate all of our instructors and students for their hard work in the past few weeks.

FDT and Crofton students place among the top Public Speakers in Canada

The Junior High Public Speaking National Championship took place over 4 days this past weekend at West Point Grey Academy in Vancouver. Our very own Vivian Gu placed as 2nd best speaker overall, which is all time record for FDT students at this competition. In addition, Katherine Feng placed in 7th overall and May Fan placed 13th overall. 

The competition is comprised of 4 individual events and several of our students broke to the final rounds in these events. In particular, Vivian was crowned the debate champion and Katherine was named the impromptu speech champion. Moreover, Vivian placed 2nd in the persuasive category and May placed 3rd in the interpretative reading category. 

Congratulations to our students for their hard work and effort in preparing for this tournament. Good job guys!

Crofton students rank as Top BC team at Junior Nationals

This weekend in Calgary, Crofton House students Vivian Gu and Lauren Meikle competed against the top teams from across Canada, debating about politics, economics, and culture. After 6 intense rounds, they broke in 5th place to the Quarter Final round! 

Lauren and Vivian were the top-ranked team from BC and Vivian placed as the 9th best Junior speaker in Canada and the Top Junior Speaker from BC.

Grace Lee won 1st place in the Grade 8-10 category at the BC "Chinese Bridge" Mandarin Speech Contest. The competition took place in Coquitlam on Sunday and was organized by the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China. Grace won against speakers from all over the province!

The World's Individual Public Speaking and Debate Championship may just be the most intense and prestigious debate competition in the world. This year in Cape Town, South Africa more than 100 speakers from 10 different countries competed across 4 challenging events. We are very pleased to announce some excellent results! Congratulations to Ashley Phord-Toy for finishing as the 15th place speaker overall and making the finals for Persuasive Speaking and Impromptu Speaking. In addition, congratulations to Maggie MacInnis who placed 18th overall and made the finals for Persuasive Speaking and Debate. Additional commendations to Nellie Sun who placed as the 34th place speaker overall.

After a long weekend of debate at UBC at the annual Spring High School Tournament, FDT's very own Grace Lee along with one of our instructors, Jacqueline Belzberg, were crowned Senior champions! Longtime FDT students become Provincial Champions

In a very heated final round, four of FDT's brightest students went head to head for the title of best Junior Team in BC. In the end, it was Leo Wang and Judy Rhee who took home the prize. We want to also congratulate Alison Lee and Kelly Ho who may have lost the final round but put in a stellar effort all weekend and are the 2nd place junior team. Also congrats to Vivian Gu and Lauren Meikle, who were 9th place team and qualified to go to Junior Nationals this April; moreover, Jason Feng and Jason Guo were the 10th place team. Alison Lee was the top junior speaker, Leo Wang was 3rd, Vivian Gu was 5th, and Judy Rhee was 9th.
